Hello there! Pencroff, of the US Navy, currently residing Iowa on a bit of property we like to call Lincoln Island, though of course it isn't. Live with Mr. Cyrus Smith, the greatest man who ever lived, Mr. Gideon Spilett, a clever type who edits the newspaper, Neb, who cooks and helps out and 's everybody's friend, I suppose, Ayrton, who's a fine strong fellow and a good friend, and my boy Harbert, who's going to be the best scientist in the United States, I'll bet my last dollar! He takes lessons from Mr. Cyrus.

Me, I'm not half so clever as any of those other fellows, but I'm satisfied if I've got tobacco in my pipe, clothes on my back, and my friends about me ~~though I'm awful fond of the little wheatfield Mr. Cyrus's agreed to let me work on~~.
